Our Encapsulation Technology

True Encapsulation Process

In contrast to other encapsulation techniques, which involve the infusion of porous silica with a solution of active, our process is a true encapsulation process. This means that the silica matrix is formed around the active providing enhanced protection of the payload. This also prevents the burst release caused by the active adsorbed at the surface of the particles as observed with other encapsulation techniques.

Matrix Particles

Our technology produces matrix particles i.e. full spheres with the active homogeneously distributed inside the pores. This means that we do not produce capsules i.e. ping pong balls.

This “micro-sponge” structure provides high mechanical strength which makes our products compatible with industrial post processing (grinding, milling, extrusion). It also enhances protection of the payload and prevents reaction between the active and its environment. This potentially provides a mechanism for co-formulation of incompatible substances.

Sustained Release

The release rate of the encapsulated molecule is controlled by the nanostructure of the micro sponge. The diffusion can be restricted by controlling the pore size, tortuosity, hydrophobicity of the matrix and surface chemistry.

By carefully controlling the encapsulation chemistry, we can control the release rate from hours to months and even years. Moreover, by carefully selecting a specific trigger, we can produce on-demand delivery and ensure that the active will reach its target with full efficacy.
